Virtual Weekend Activities

By: Ellice Ellis ‘20

I don’t have to tell you that the 9-0 is closed. There are no parties on the row to attend, no basketball games to frolic to, and sadly, we can’t watch movies with friends or take a trip to the beach.

In place of in-person fun, I’ve combed the internet for some cool virtual events to attend this weekend!

For Concert Lovers & Music Aficionados

Every Friday, CSUN’s performing arts center, The Soraya hosts a “Directors Selects” series, where they broadcast iconic performances and chat with artists from all over the world! This Friday, on their Facebook Live ( @TheSorayaStage), watch Artist-in-Residence Niv Ashkenazi perform at 4 pm. Learn more here on the website.

On Saturday mornings tune into “Music Morning” hosted by The Broad’s Stage at Home. Each home-based performance is streamed via Facebook Live and then available on their YouTube channel. Last week’s performance featured bassist Jennifer Leitham and saxophonist Mindi Abair, which you can watch here.

This Saturday tune into Global Citizen’s One World: Together At Home, a global musical special curated in collaboration with Lady Gaga, featuring over 70 artists. One World: Together At Home will be broadcast on Saturday at 5 pm PDT/8 pm EDT. There will also be a digital show before the broadcast starting at 11 am PDT/2 pm EDT. The goal of the event is to encourage people to stay at home and to raise money for coronavirus relief. Tune into past performances and check where you can see the special here.

For Hustlers & Go-Getters

This Sunday, attend Matriarch Digital Media’s “Women in Podcasting” digital meetup. You can talk with Founder Twila Dang about anything podcasting that your heart desires. Dang and other female podcasters will also share updates and advice on podcasting in today’s tough climate. Sign up for the free event here.

I swear by Aaptiv, the audio-based fitness app. Better than the app is the live workouts hosted on their Youtube Channel. This Friday at 10 am PST, Aaptiv will host an at-home high-intensity workout session, along with a lazy day workout on Saturday at 10 am PST and a yoga session on Sunday at 9 am. Access the live sessions here

Immerse Yourself in Nature

Earth Day is approaching! This Sunday, attend natured-centered teach-ins featuring speakers, artists, and musicians who will address the harm inflicted on marginalized and environmental justice communities.  The full day of events is hosted by Pittsburgh Earth Week. Learn more on their website here.

Last week, the Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers & Native Plants debuted a live internet show called “Poppy Hour.” The weekly show will air every Friday afternoon from 5:30 to 6:30 pm PST. The live series features some of California’s native plant gardens and the people responsible for bringing them to life. Tune in via Zoom and YouTube. Get more info here.

Don’t Forget Netflix Party

If you simply want to watch a movie with friends, check out Google Chrome browser extension, Netflix Party. Netflix Party your film or TV show with your friends’ and adds a live chat on one side of the screen. So far, I’ve watched Moonlight (2016), Tiger King (2020), and The Great British Bake Off!

Check out Netflix Party here!
