Top Tips For Finding Friends as a Freshman

By: Sydney Fiorentino ‘24

While my freshman year took place entirely online, I know what it’s like to start a new school with no friends. It can be daunting to walk up to people and start a conversation without knowing how they’ll respond. However, USC is a very social school, and almost everyone is willing to answer your questions. If striking up random conversation still sounds too scary, here are some tips to ease into finding friends.

Go to Fairs and Join Clubs

Going to the involvement fair is a great place to start. Visiting tables that you are interested in means that everyone will be really friendly and willing to talk to you. The fair itself is a great conversation starter, and you might find a new club to join that will help you become even more of a part of the community. USC also hosts more events to meet people, which you can read more about here.

Become Friends With Your Neighbors!

While it may sound corny, try to be friends with your neighbors or people on your floor. If you feel uncomfortable knocking on their door and introducing yourself, let it happen naturally. If you see people in the hall, go ahead and smile and talk to them.

Go out and explore campus and the village

Popular spots on campus and in the Village are great places to make friends. Keep your eye out for other freshmen who might seem a bit lost or that you share something in common with. Offer to go exploring together or ask a question about their dorm or favorite library spot. You can also ask if they want to go to any USC football games or go tailgating together!

Try Making USC Friends Online!

If you’re scared of talking with people in-person when you first meet, you can always make online friends! There is a USC Discord which is very active, as well as a GroupMe. I know it can be scary to reach out, but sending a quick message on one of the platforms to introduce yourself is helpful!

Get people’s numbers!

When you meet people in person, just ask them for their number or Instagram to stay in touch! It won’t hurt to ask, and it’s one way to facilitate meeting up again. Even if you just briefly spoke in class, this person could turn into your next best friend if you know how to reach out to them!
