Time to Recharge: Here’s What I’m Doing Over Break

By: Sydney Fiorentino ‘24

The semester is almost over, and if you are like me, your social battery may need some recharging. I would say I’m an outgoing person and partially extroverted, but there are definitely times where I would love to stay home and watch Netflix by myself. I’ve noticed USC is a pretty social school, and I get to see my friends every single day and night. However, I do get tired of partying or going out every weekend, and sometimes I just want to sleep and be left alone. Now that winter break is coming up, this is the perfect time for me and anyone else to recharge their social battery. Here are some things I am going to do to help myself relax:

1. Treat Myself

It’s been a long and hard semester and both you and I deserve to treat ourselves! Get the pair of sneakers you wanted or take yourself out to dinner! I know that when I go shopping, I’ll treat myself by buying at least one thing that I really want without second-guessing myself.

2. Take Myself on a Walk or Hike

Something I don’t have a lot of time for at USC is time for myself. Just to have long periods to walk or hike around my neighborhood while listening to music and reflecting is something I miss from back home. I used to go on 2 to 4 hour walks or hikes that I loved doing each day, so that is something I will do again when I’m back home. It gives me the chance to reflect, bring myself into the moment, and forgive myself for anything from the past.

3. Do Everything I Have Been Wanting To

Something I like to do is create vision boards. This is essentially where I put everything that is aesthetically pleasing to me on a Pinterest board. It can range from food, to clothing ideas, to body goals. Over break, I want to focus on myself, and this includes achieving or going after certain goals of mine: achieving a certain nail art design or going after a certain makeup look, for instance. Achieve something you’ve always wanted over break. It can be anything: from going to bed before 12 am, to drinking more water everyday.

4. Set up a “Me Night”

I used to do this all the time during quarantine; essentially, I would make myself some popcorn or dessert, turn on either my fairy lights or neon sign, light a candle, and turn off anything else that was bright in my room. I’d then go under the covers of my bed and watch a Netflix movie, TV show, or Youtube vlog channel until I got tired. I’d spend the night making myself feel relaxed and doing exactly what I wanted with no expectations. Set up a night where you do something that you want to do too and pick an activity that will remove the stress from your life.

Holiday break will allow you the time to catch up with old friends if that brings you happiness too! Whatever you choose to do, once break starts, all school expectations are dropped until the next semester so take the time to relax, reflect on yourself, and recharge!
