Slice Shop @ TCC Pizzas Ranked from Worst to Best

By: Ngai Yeung

I was somewhat surprised when TCC began selling pizza slices last school year. I understand the pasta place next to it, but when college students already get so much free pizza from club events and campus talks, pizza that costs money better be worth it. I tried all of Slice Shop’s Pizzas and ranked them from worst to best. Here’s my take:

Worst

Hawaiian Pizza | $5.99

I will be upfront and admit my bias: pineapple does not belong on pizza. Why would anyone put a sour, tropical fruit on a bed of savory cheese next to the sodium bombs that are ham slices? In what world is this flavor combination appropriate? I was thoroughly unimpressed with their Hawaiian pizza, not just because it’s, well, a flavor I don’t like, but the ham slices were rough, and the pineapples lacked any kind of taste. Pass.

Pepperoni Pizza | $6.49

If there’s such a thing as too much pepperoni, you can experience it through this pizza. The densely packed pieces gave the pizza a pleasantly crunchy texture, but I’m not sure the tradeoff of having tiny pools of oil lingering inside the pepperoni is worth it. It’s also herby and way too salty, but pepperoni fans already know what they are getting into. Make your decision wisely.

Best

Spicy Vodka Pizza | $5.99

This gets ranked higher just because the flavor is special. It’s also deceptive. There is no hint of vodka, nor does the sprinkles of chili flakes throughout the cheese do anything to spice it up. It’s more like a generic cheese pizza where there’s a thin layer of cheese on top, but the tomato base at the bottom is less tangy but more well-rounded, velvety, and pink. If you want the full spicy vodka experience, read my review of Filone’s Pasta Kitchen next door and get their spicy vodka pasta.

Cheese Pizza | $5.99

I am basic, but not when it comes to food, so I’m surprised this ended up ranking the highest. You see, when I eat a cheese pizza, I expect an uninspiring, single dimension of cheese. This one impressed me because though the cheese on it was, at times, as thick as my thumb, it was creamy without being overly rich and stuffy. The pillowy layer rests on top of a fluffy yet firm crust that resembles focaccia. Maybe I am hyping this up too much, but I can say with certainty that my slice was warm and fresh; the cheese melted in my mouth. Mmh.

In the end, none of these really stood out. It is what it is for on campus food, and hey, it’s a new option and it’s relatively cheaper. Snack on!
