While finally figuring out your study abroad plans is exciting, there’s also a fair bit of stress as the idea becomes a reality. One of the most common causes of this stress is packing. Whether you’re studying abroad for one month or six months, it can be quite challenging to assess which items you’ll absolutely need and what’s a waste of precious suitcase space. Here are a few must-haves and tips to help you pack for your time studying in a new country.

Plug Adapter

A plug adapter is one of the most essential items! Odds are, your study abroad location, unless it’s in Central America, will not have the same plug type as the US. Make sure you’ll be able to charge your phone as soon as you land by purchasing an international plug adapter in advance. It’ll come in handy on any future trips abroad too!

Don’t Pack Electrical Items

If you’re studying abroad in Europe or Asia, WAIT to buy any electrical supplies like a hair dryer until you arrive because the voltages vary. For example, the electrical voltage in the US is 120 V, while in many parts of Europe, it is 220 V. This voltage difference can cause an item like a hair dryer to fry. Fortunately, many shops in Europe and Asia sell these items for a good price.

Remember, the Weather Is Variable

Remember to pack for all types of weather! Research the location you are studying in and places you wish to visit while you’re away to determine which types of clothes you want to pack. If you are studying abroad for an entire semester, consider bringing both winter and summer clothes given the temperature changes in different seasons.

Medicine

Many countries do not carry the same flu, allergy, and pain medicine that you may be used to in the US, so you should pack some extra over-the-counter medication in case you need them while abroad. Similarly, if you take prescription medication, it is important that you have a sufficient amount of your medication for the entirety of your time abroad. Make sure to visit your pharmacy to review the necessary steps to obtain enough of your medication to last throughout your time abroad.

White Sneakers

White sneakers are a must for studying abroad, no matter the location! Everyone can benefit from bringing a pair of white sneakers because they can be worn in casual and formal settings. They can also be paired with a broad range of outfits and can be worn regardless of the weather. Vejas, Reeboks, Adidas, and Nike Air Force 1s are some of the most popular white sneakers at a reasonable price.

Overall, try not to stress too much about packing because, even if you forget something, there are simple solutions once you get to your destination! And, remember, when it comes to clothes, you will probably want to purchase some new clothes while abraod, so try not to overpack. Limiting the amount of clothing you pack to one large suitcase is a good rule of thumb. Once the packing is complete, all you need to do is look forward to your departure!
