Ojai

Ojai, California, in Ventura County, is one of the most underrated towns nearby! Nestled in the Topatopa Mountains, this city boasts many things to do, from hikes to art shopping to massages. This destination is perfect for those looking to enter complete relaxation before the stress of finals. For example, the Day Spa of Ojai is highly recommended with numerous different treatment types.

Solvang

Have you ever heard of the Danish-style city hidden in a valley near Santa Barbara? If not, Solvang is known across the country for its Danish architecture, restaurants, and cultural festivals. Walking around the small town and visiting the numerous shops and boutiques is a great way to spend the day. Activities like horseback riding and museum-going are also very popular ways to explore Solvang. Particularly, the Elverhoj Museum of History and Art tells the story of the Danish-American immigrants who founded the city in 1911.

Julian

Inland of San Diego lies a small town called Julian, which is known for its fall foliage and its freshly baked pies. Although Southern California is not known for its fall leaves, Julian is an exception, given the beautiful woods that surround it. In terms of pie, the Julian Pie Company is extremely popular and from personal experience, home to some of the best berry pies. If you are looking for a true autumn experience nearby, Julian is the perfect place.

Joshua Tree

On the opposite side of nature from a place like Julian is Joshua Tree. This national park stretches across parts of the Colorado and Mojave deserts and features hiking and rock-climbing experiences. Additionally, Joshua Tree is a popular destination for stargazing, given the absence of city lights. There are many Airbnbs available in Joshua Tree that do not break the bank!

Lake Arrowhead

Lake Arrowhead is an excellent Southern California destination during all four seasons. It offers activities such as hiking, off-roading, ziplining, visiting escape rooms, and more. Given its high elevation in the San Bernardino Mountains, this community is also known for its ability to interpret the California seasons via fall foliage, snow, or blooming flowers. Specifically, Lake Arrowhead is a perfect place for those trying to get into hiking given the ease of most of its trails and the unique opportunity to join guided group hikes.

No matter the time of year, these local destinations are exceptional choices for leisurely road trips near USC, whether you are planning a solo trip or the annual friend group getaway!
