Takeaways from the Asia Pacific Virtual Career Fair

By: Ngai Yeung ‘23

An odd and extensive game of corporate speed dating, USC’s semesterly career fairs have always been one of the biggest events on campus. But as all events were moved online this spring, the school continued to host a virtual career fair as well as a smaller, separate one for the Asia Pacific region on April 23rd PDT, the latter of which I attended; here are my takeaways from this novel experience.

Visions and Voices: Anarchy in Asian America

By: Terry Nguyen ‘20

On Friday, March 24, USC Visions and Voices hosted a panel discussion with four prominent Japanese American directors and producers called “Anarchy in Asian America: Sex, Punk and Transgressive Cinema.” The three directors whose works were featured are Gregg Araki, Roddy Bogawa, and Jon Moritsugu; the panel was lead by producer Marcus Hu, who dubbed the directors the “bad boys” of Asian American cinema. The three had met in the 1980’s and have been in contact since, but haven’t had a chance to host a full panel together due to their busy schedules.

Reviewing the Freshman Dorms: 2016-2017 Edition

By: Adriana Bernal Martinez ‘20

Next year, we’ll have McCarthy Honors College in The Village to consider as an additional option to the already present freshman dorms – but for now, I’ve taken upon the task of getting the scoop on current USC students’ reviews of their residence halls and suites for the 2016-2017 year. Here’s to hoping that this post compiling facts and feedback from the people that were in your shoes last year can help you incoming Class of 2021-ers a little bit in your housing preferences! It’s coming up a lot sooner than you think.

USC Celebrates Dr. King

By: Ellice Ellis ‘20

This past Monday the USC Black Staff and Faculty Caucus honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with its 36th annual Dr.King Celebration at Tommy’s Place. I attended the event which featured performances by USC Students; Celeste Butler, Elshaddai Mulugeta, M.C Omete Anassi, and a powerful lecture from guest speaker and actor Gerald C. Rivers. These performers praised Dr. King calling him a timeless prophet and a true visionary; along with sharing their talents with USC students, faculty, staff, and guests of the university. When the celebration started I was happy to hear the students and faculty singing the black national anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by James Weldon Johnson; a song that for is not often performed at many events around campus. The event went on to be the pinnacle of black excellence not only showcasing student talent but acknowledging the words and important messages that Dr. King had to share.

USC Own It

By: Grace Carballo ‘17

Last Saturday, September 24, I had the privilege of attending the inaugural USC Own It women’s leadership summit. Luckily as soon as I heard about it a few weeks ago, I booked my spot immediately, because tickets eventually sold out. To give you an idea of the scale of all this, over 450 students and 65 speakers attended. Own It was started by two Georgetown students in 2013, with the first summit taking place in 2014 and being so successful that it expanded nationwide. The Own It network now encompasses 8 universities including USC, and we are certainly in good company.

Olympic Trials on Campus!

By: Grace Carballo ‘17

This past weekend was long, both because of President’s Day and also because many ambitious folks ran great lengths. You may have seen some world class athletes speed by you on Saturday. If you didn’t ask follow up questions, allow me to clarify- what you witnessed was the U.S. Marathon Olympic Trials. 204 countries will be competing this summer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and each country can send just 3 athletes (except for team sports). The marathon trials are held in February because the event is so exhausting the athletes need ample time to recover and prepare for the actual games in July. Every four years the marathon trials are held in a different U.S. city and this year Los Angeles had the honor.

Crosstown Showdown: USC Men’s Basketball takes on UCLA at 7:30 Tonight!

By: Emily Young MA ‘16

USC Men’s Basketball is on fire. The team’s 17-5 start is its best since the 1991-92 season. Not only is the team playing spectacular, but tonight’s game determines who runs LA. USC Men’s Basketball has already defeated the UCLA Bruins (13-9) at Pauley Pavilion 89-75, but they need our fan support for the clean sweep. (Our last regular season series sweep over the Bruins was in 2010).

The Polite, Twisted Genius of Vince Gilligan

In 2008, America was introduced to Walter White, a mild mannered, high school science teacher who had just been diagnosed with cancer. Five years later, 10.3 million people tuned in to watch Walter White, a murderous drug kingpin, meet his demise. Last week, on January 26, a group of USC students crowded inside the Bing Theater to get the chance to see the man who made the monster.

I’ve always known what I’ve wanted to do—become a fashion editor. My love of fashion came from reading stacks and stacks of magazines when I was young, and that turned into following blogs and editorial websites as the industry expanded. More so than reading, though, I’ve also loved writing. So I actually started off as a Print and Digital Journalism major but felt that studying PR would give me better access to the kinds of fashion opportunities that exist in Los Angeles, and it definitely has…

I Raised a Part-Wild Cat During My Last Semester at USC

By: Lauren Brose ‘15

Everyone said I was crazy for getting a cat and it was totally unexpected of me. I’ve always wanted to have a pet and raise a kitten or puppy at a young age. I considered waiting off until the end of my last semester, but I thought about my upcoming summer. I thought the perfect time to get a pet was when I finish school and have to transition to the rest of my entire life aka the real world. So a week after spring graduation, I got King George.
