Take Back and Speak Up

I have been receiving a stream of emails from the USC Department of Public Safety about sexual assaults occurring around Trojan parameters. These notifications have made its way in my inbox at least three times this month. I recall one incident in which one girl was ambushed as one guy restrained her arms while the other guy caressed her buttocks. Thankfully, none of the cases involved full-blown rape, but it is about time that students acknowledge this issue.
My Thoughts on Theatre of The Oppressed

Tonight was one of many Take Back The Night events hosted by USC’s Women’s Student Assembly (WSA): Theatre of the Oppressed with Gender Justice Los Angeles. Their mission is to: “Build campaigns to break the barriers that directly impact low-income trans people of color by focusing on health, wellness, peace and safety. Run political education and leadership development programs that build a base of skilled, confident and unified trans leaders to fight for change. Create safe spaces through peer-support groups and community events that highlight the strength, power and resilience of our entire community.”
My Opinion on the Latest Race Issue

National uproar commenced when a video of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity members at the University of Oklahoma singing racially charged lyrics on a bus went viral. I’m not going to post the actual words on here,but just know their chants were laced with the N-word and referenced noosing. The video was released three days ago, and has been shown on numerous news sources from Huffington Post to World Star Hip Hop.

In honor of Black History month, people tend to venerate the African-Americans who have fought for civil rights. We constantly hear about the activism and valor of the famed Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, and Rosa Parks. But there are an innumerable amount of Black people who have helped benefit lives for posterity in other essential ways. I feel that the protestors, orators, and national leaders have overshadowed the inventors of the past. Black people have hand-crafted appliances we use daily. Below is a list of a few Black inventors who’ve made our lives a lot easier.
Greek Leaders: It Is Our Responsibility

Holding a position in the Greek System comes with a certain level of social responsibility; this applies to both fraternity and sorority leaders. I believe now is the time to educate ourselves on what some of these specific responsibilities are– not just responsibilities to our own chapter’s constituents, but to our university’s student body as a whole.

I went into it with very little prior knowledge about the show itself and left with tremendous respect for the performers, organizers, and even the audience. Oh, and of course, vaginas.

There’s been a lot of talk about sexual assault and domestic violence with Valentine’s Day and the upcoming movie, Fifty Shades of Grey (which is a whole other can of worms), as there should be. In my opinion, these are morose and heinous topics, but also a reality of the world we live in. By keeping silent, victims will continue to be hurt and abusers will not be stopped.

So I am standing at Study Hall, the newly remodeled 2-9 off of Hoover that serves draft beer, sandwiches and shareable starters. It’s Saturday and USC is slaughtering Colorado at our home front. An older male wearing a Colorado shirt approaches me and my boyfriend and strikes a conversation. I learn he went to USC undergrad and is currently a grad student at Colorado. After getting the fundamental details of our backgrounds out of the way, he asks if I want to hear a joke. I love jokes and I am not easily offended—why not? He says: “What’s the best thing about duct tape?” By choice, I am not going to finish this joke because I do not advocate rape jokes of any type—but nonetheless he delivered a rape joke to me, a female. I was disgusted.

There has been a really big push within the past year for sexual assault awareness and prevention. Trust me when I say, I feel much safer now that some of the guys around campus are educated on what rape and sexual assault are. Unfortunately, people are still gonna rape others and still sexually assault others, either out of ignorance or because they are horrible people. This blog post is for that horrible situation or if one of your friends comes home from the night claiming to have been sexually assaulted or raped. This is the guide to helping the person who has been assaulted and getting them to help if they need some.

What brings together the Asian, Black, Latino and LGBT communities Project Remix is the meeting of four cultural centers at USC: Asian Pacific American Student Services (APASS), El Centro Chicano (the Latino Cultural Center), the Center for Black Cultural and Student Affairs (CBCSA) and the LGBT Resource Center (LGBT RC).
