Valentine’s Day has come and gone and here I am again: single. I’m twenty years old, and I’ve been single for twenty consecutive years. Not to sound all cringey Riverdale ~I don’t fit in and I don’t want to fit in~ but I’m one of the only people I know that has never had a serious relationship, nor have I ever kissed somebody. Being in college, where it can often seem like everyone is hooking up with everyone else, being someone who’s inexperienced in dating can make you feel weird. Even broken. But, I’ve been working on myself lately, and in doing that, I’m working on telling myself that I’m not defined by whether I’ve kissed someone or not. During college, there is so much uncertainty with what the future holds— Not knowing if you’ll get a job, not knowing where will it be, and asking yourself “what’s next for me?” is a daunting experience. I came to this realization my sophomore year. It became clear to me then that I needed to do whatever it took to put myself in a good spot for a job upon graduation. That was when I decided my life is 100% about my goals. I’m sure many of us desire accomplishing a number of specific things before 30 such as traveling the world or moving up quickly in the working world. These aspirations truly reflect who we are as people; therefore, we owe ourselves this time to fully discover who we really are.

Valentine’s Day is this weekend and I will be spending it alone this year. I have no issue with it, as I don’t believe v-day is synonymous to S.A.D (single awareness day). Like every major holiday, it is not defined by the man or woman you wake up and go to bed thinking of, but instead being in the company of people you love.
